Woolacombe Beach shares the highest percentage of 5-star reviews across the UK
Devon is renowned as a top UK holiday destination, thanks in part to its stunning coastline. Woolacombe Beach, in particular, has earned a leading reputation, boasting the highest number of five-star reviews on Tripadvisor among Devon's beaches. Eager to determine if Woolacombe's beach supremacy extends beyond county lines, Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks set out to compare it against the entire UK.
81% of the 3,815 total reviews for Woolacombe are 5-star
Whilst looking specifically at England data, the results show that from a total of 3815 total reviews (as of July 2024), 3102 (81%) give Woolacombe the 5-star review, securing it the top spot in comparison to other popular England beaches like Weymouth (71%) and Brighton (43%).
In second place comes Perranporth, which received a total of 2316 reviews. 1861 (80%) of these are 5 stars, narrowly missing the top spot by 1%. Despite Perranporth Beach coming in a close second to Woolacombe, Perranporth is no bathing allowed according to the Government’s water bathing report, meaning families will be unable to enjoy the sea at their own leisure. This is an important reason that will make a difference in satisfaction level, reducing the chances of Perranporth claiming the top spot as the best beach in comparison to front runner Woolacombe.
In this sample, Brighton takes the last spot with only 2029 5-star reviews (43%). Perhaps this is a sign beach goers prefer a sandy beach over a pebble one?
The data caps England’s most reviewed beaches at 2000 to make the percentages more comparable, helping to show how fierce the England competition is for Woolacombe Beach.
What makes Woolacombe so inviting to deserve this positive national score?
Access to the beach: Woolacombe Beach is easily accessible for those who need wheelchair access, with a slope entrance. There is also a beach wheelchair and tramper that are suitable for travelling on the sand. Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks also offer wheelchair-friendly caravans.
The beach also enjoys many facilities and local amenities that will play a part in the 5-star ratings, like car parks, a lifeguard service, toilets, first aid and food and beach goods outlets.
The length: Woolacombe Beach comes in at over 3 miles long, making it the longest sandy beach the UK has to offer. This means beach goers will have plenty of space to enjoy the beach, including making sandcastles!
The views: As well as the length of the beach allowing for breathtaking views, Woolacombe Beach enjoys sand dunes, rock pools and views from Baggy Point, showcasing the beautiful coastal, sea and farmland views.
As an overarching package, a combination of these benefits makes Woolacombe Beach one of England's finest.
What about the other UK nations?
Tripadvisor also shows the top reviewed beaches for the other UK nations Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. These reviews have been kept separate due the total number of reviews coming below the 2000 threshold.
Wales:
Rhossili Bay takes the top spot in the Wales category, with 1697 (87%) of the total reviews being 5-star.
Northern Ireland:
East Strand in Northern Ireland, while receiving a much smaller total of 196 reviews, boasts an impressive 82% five-star rating. Clearly, those who visit this beach have discovered a hidden gem!
Scotland:
Luskentyre claims the top spot in Scotland with an impressive 94% of its 1139 total reviews earning five stars.
